630

mylist | community | blog | twitter

630 (read as Romio) is a female utaite who has been active since 2008. The origin of her name is that on her first first upload, she mistakenly wrote the date as "6/30" instead of "6/03".

630 has a light and airy voice, somewhat similar to utaite like Himawari, Ritsuka, and Chata. She often sings at a high register and can reach high notes with ease. Her singing style tends to lack power, but she makes it up with her harmonies and versatility. She can sing in a cute voice, but she can also sound haunting, or even creepy like her Mugen Nostalgia. She can sing quite well in English and does it quite often. She has a bit of an accent, but it only adds to her charm.

Her early uploads aren't as impressive as her more recent works probably because she used a Skype microphone to record. Despite that they're still worth a listen.

She has several collaborations with Vocaloid producer fatmanP. She even provided the vocals for the NNI version of his popular song Discommunication. Utaite Namakonyuruko has some collaborations with 630. Their voices and both soft and similar, blending quite well. She also has participated in Fullkawa Honpo's alta mugs and Alice in wonderword albums.

sample songs
A. Solo Songs
Sayonara Midnight (Rerulili original)
Blue/Green (AVTechno! original)
DANCE (R&B Cover) (LovelyP original)
Shiryosuru Zombie (FICUSEL original)

B. Collaborations
CRAWL (with Namakoryuruko; Fullkawa Honpo original)
GiRL (fatmanP collaboration)
A Boy may cry (fatmanP collaboration)
Hiseiton Kuiki (AnmakuP collaboration)

Stephie says
I only recently learned about 630. My first 630 song was her version of mugs on Fullkawa Honpo's album Alice in wonderword. It quickly became my favorite track on that CD and I really liked her "English singing" voice.... if that makes sense. While she can sing a variety of genres, I find that her voice best suits songs with a subdued atmosphere. I feel like it really shows off the beauty in her voice, and additionally the lack of "power" in her singing is more obvious in rock songs (for example). I absolutely loooove her cover of Rerulili's Sayonara Midnight. I hope she covers more songs like it. Also I've been looping her fatmanP collab songs a lot!

Aikawa Kozue / 愛川こずえ

mylist | community | twitter | blog | youtube channel

I think that everyone, who is interested in Nico Nico Douga, heard about DANCEROID at least once. I would like to introduce you one of the founders of the team – Aikawa Kozue.

In the beginning she danced alone using other artists' choreography. She uploaded her first video in August 2008. In July 2009 she danced "Luka Luka Night Fever" presenting her own choreography and this brought her fame. Her choreography was later used in the PSP game Hatsune Miku-Project DIVA-extend. Also in 2009 she, along with Itokutora (Ikura) and Minka Lee, founded DANCEROID. The team has changed over the time but I think that she is still the most popular member of this group.

Kozue prefers dancing to pop songs. Her choreographies include, first of all, many energetic and sweeping hand movements and simple steps resembling aerobic dance (a bit like zumba figures, but you shouldknow that the boundaries between many dances are very thin and sometimes it's really hard to distinguish them).

She chiefly performs with DANCEROID, but the girls take parts in many events, sometimes abroad. Kozue and Ikura were in Singapore on Eyo 2010 and in Los Angeles at the concert of Hatsune Miku "MIKUNOPOLIS". We can also watch Kozue on all DANCEROID's DVDs.

Sample dances:

1. Solos
Luka Luka Night Fever (Kozue's choreography)
Sweet Magic (Satchaso's choreography)
Hello/How Are You (Debisaku's choreography)
Lily Lily Burning Night (Kozue's choreography)

2. Collabs
Mikan (with Miume and Nora)
My Room Disco Night (with Hinata, Reichel, and Nora; Rere's choreography)
te-yut-te (with Mayuki; Mayuki's choreography)

Mono says:
Kozue is not one of my favourite female odorite, but when I'm watching DANCEROID's videos she draws the most of my attention. She is always smiling and it is clear that she deeply enjoys dancing. Her attitude has the biggest influence on my impression of her performances. While I may not like her very much I can understand why she is liked by so many people.

I'm sorry for being late. Chinese New Year shenanigans and work stuff as usual XD;. This ranking has a lot of 40mP's new song as well as the surprisingly popular MARUDARUMA song. Of course there's tons of Rin-chan Nau covers, so enjoy! I apologize if my comments sound brainless, I'm actually typing this up at work /getsshotbyboss

The first Indies ranking of the year contains surprisingly quite a few new songs plus the usual retains from the previous ranking. Surprisingly, there are also a lot of comebacks this ranking, some even from 2010! I don't have any explanation for it, but I hope you enjoy the reminiscence :D.

Like with the Weekly Utaran, a mirror to the English Nico Nico Site is also provided for the Monthly Indies Ranking, so if you want to comment in English, feel free to view this one.

Like with the Weekly Utaran, we have a lot of new songs this week in the Vocaloid ranking, including a few by producers which might be new to your ears, but totally worth checking out because they are amazing. I'll try to put comments on all the new stuff but I'm a bit pressed for time, so they might be lacking, sorry!

As usual, please put your thoughts about your favorite or newly-discovered songs/producers in the comments below!

This week has a lot of new stuff, half of which consists of tons of Rin-chan Nau! covers, which, if I may warn everyone, can trigger earworming for a long time. If you wish to watch a different, insane kind of ranking, you might want to go watch the Rin-chan Nau! Ranking @ niconico.com (link to Japanese NND here. :D

Since many people requested I bring back my comments in each song, I did put them here again, although I hope you'd also put your thoughts in the songs, too! I mean, I'm thankful for the comments I receive before but it feels weird when people only comment to correct my mistakes in the post ^^;. I keep getting panic attacks whenever I see a new comment in a post bec. it's almost 100% a correction LOLOL. So if you could, please also leave your thoughts about the rankings with your possible corrections orz

Meian / メイアン

mylist | community | blog

Meian has been uploading her covers to Nico Nico Douga for more than three years now (she just celebrated her third anniversary last August 2011). She might be a bit less popular to some but she actually has a good playback record, with some of her songs reaching more than 100k views and most of her uploads not less that 10k views.

With a thin, high voice, Meian has a beautiful range and can sing both ballads and upbeat pop songs well. Her rockish songs are a bit lacking in terms of power, but makes up for it with her range. She covers songs "by-the-book" and rarely does adlibs. She does entertain autotune quite well and she still sounds good when using it. Her voice also has a characteristic quirk that makes it unconsciously cute and nice to listen to. It's just that sometimes, she overdoes the "little moe voice" effect and ends up pinning her voice high too much.

A self-proclaimed gamer, Meian has also contracted the participation of her "riajuu" younger sister to sing duets in her early years. Later on, she almost exclusively collaborates with utaite Namfon in duets.

sample covers
A. Solos
Melancholic (Junky original)
Double Lariat (Ago Aniki original)
Nisoku Hokou (DECO*27 original)
Alice (FullkawaP original)
Koko ni Aru Koto (FuwariP original)

B. Collabs
Hajimete no Koi ga Owaru Toki (w/ younger sister; ryo original)
Aa, Subarashiki Nyansei (w/ Namfon; Nem original)

nikki says
I've been hearing about Meian's name for a while (especially in the ranking) but I never really got to listen to her much. However when I listened to her Melancholic I think it was really cute and had been on the lookout ever since for her uploads. I find her collabs with Namfon super adorable (esp. their Nyansei!). As someone who prefers fuller, deeper voice for female singers, I don't really list Meian as my favorite but she sounds wonderful so I recommend her for people who like listening to high, thin voices like Ritsuka's, Nayugorou's, and a bit of Keisen's.

TokuP / とくP

mylist | community | website | Wikipedia entry.

This writeup took me a long time to write because of the very vast history and work-related information TokuP has. I mean, he has his own Wikipedia entry, for goodness' sake! Of course, there is probably no one in the Vocaloid fandom who does not know him. He is known for his highly popular song, SPiCa and other Vocaloid hits.

Born March 5, 1978, Toku or Yoshinori Abe is not only a Vocaloid producer but is also a professional arranger/composer/musician. He was first a member of the professional band "beatica" and was named arranger/manipulater/remixer in it. His producer name "Toku" also came from his nickname in this band. Before and while he was working on Vocaloid stuff, he was also doing pro works as an arranger and manipulator for artists like Angela Aki, Dir en grey, KinKi Kids, baroque, Superfly, Rie fu, Rag Fair, etc. He also arranged the opening song for Fate/Zero, "oath sign", sung by LiSa. He was also part of arranging the ending song of Ano Hana "secret base~kimi ga kureta mono(10 years after ver.)", under the name estlabo, a collaborative group composed of TokuP himself, wowaka, FullkawaP, and hachi. And he was also the composer for the opening song of the anime Freezing, "Color", which was sung by MARiA. You can see a list of his professional work here.

He started uploading his Vocaloid works in Nico Nico Douga in 2009, and was noticed for the impeccable quality of his songs. His first two songs are based from Beatica songs, and his first original "SPiCa" remains his most widely-acclaimed creation in the Vocaloid community. He is known for making electropop upbeat songs which, although appearing to have a common rhythm, has a multitude of sounds. His ballads are often dramatic but powerful. and Almost all of his songs have the characteristic "rising mood" wherein the song starts slow before slowly picking up pace towards a fantastically grand chorus that sets a high climax for his songs. He uses a lot of instruments, mostly distinct keyboards and guitars (esp. in the recent uploads).

TokuP is known as one of the first producers to have used GUMI after her release in 2009. However, he mostly uses Hatsune Miku for his works, tuning her solid with mid-range that slowly rises into a crescendo with a high pitch. He also uses Miku append in some of his works. Aside from Miku and GUMI, he has also used Miki and Kagamine Rin.

Despite having professional work (for other artists), TokuP still collaborates with other Vocaloid producers, like with estlabo and Vocaloid music label Balloom. Aside from his Vocaloid works, he also concentrates on his non-Vocaloid indie groups, namely GARNiDELiA with utaite MARiA, and Headphone Tokyo, where he is the composer, keyboardist, mixer and sound producer.

TokuP has released a number of doujn CDs including SPiCa, SPiCa ReACT, etc. He doesn't have a major release yet, but he has taken part in tons of compilation albums including EX:P2~Ex:Producers, DEBUTANTE VI, VOCALO SMILE/TEARS feat. Hatsune Miku, VOCALOID BEST from Nico Nico Douga, EXIT TUNES PRESENTS Vocalolegend, Hatsune Miku - Project DIVA - extend Complete Collection, etc.

sample songs
A. Vocaloid
blue bird (GUMI)
Butterfly (Hatsune Miku)
The Universe (miki)
Hands (Kagamine Rin)
Melting Summer (GUMI)
Arrow of Love (Hatsune Miku)

B. Non-Vocaloid
ORiON (GARNiDELiA)
GET OUT (GARNiDELiA x L.I.N.E.)
MACHINE DOLL (feat. Harada Hitomi)

nikki says
Like most of you, I also knew TokuP from his work SPiCa, which I think is already a Vocaloid classic. However, I didn't start liking him because of this song, but for his other two songs blue bird and Butterfly. I think he's a really talented person, especially after seeing him collaborate with MARiA for GARNiDELiA and see them perform live. I always thought he was a man of potential, but I didn't think he would be this accomplished until I read up about him. Seriously... He worked for 12012 albums!! That band's like...they used to be one of my favorites. Also, Angela Aki!! His list of works in his website is impressive (even though it's mostly arrangement/manipulation, working for that many artists...). But outside the being pro and stuff, I'm mostly amazed at how wonderfully he could juggle all of this work while still posting food pictures in his twitter. Having tons of wonderful accomplishments is pretty norm for talented people, but managing to do all of them so well without missing a beat, that IS saying something.
