Producer Spotlight: Whoo

Whoo / フー

Whoo started uploading his Vocaloid works in Nico Nico Douga October of 2009 and since then he has been steadily putting out songs. He is part of the music circle "s10rw" which also includes monaca:factory, ryuryu and yuxuki / sorairo club.

Whoo's music style is fixed between folk rock and progressive rock with Celtic and ambient influences. One defining characteristic of his music is his use of guitars in every song. His guitar melody is sharp, upbeat and often accompanied with subtle but snappy drums plus additional sounds like chimes, piano, accordion, harmonica and other music. For some reason, when I first listened to his works, I'm reminded of three bands: The Beatles, Blackmore's Night and Pink Floyd ^^;.

Hatsune Miku is Whoo's sole Vocaloid, and she is always tuned to sing in gentle, whispery notes. Despite that, she sounds lovely in very high pitches and can sing well against the sharp guitars.

Aside from composing Vocaloid songs, Whoo also delves into collaborating with singers for Indies music, recently with Tabun Jibun. He also does covers, albeit rarely, of his own songs.

I decided to follow Whoo's works after I heard his PARADES, which I eternally love. I used to mix him up with Yuxuki because their Miku sound so similar, but later on, I realize Yuxuki has a more pop approach while Whoo is mostly rock-ish. By the way, Whoo's album, Oto no nai Heya no Naka de is really lovely. Actually, the whole s10rw's style is similarly beautiful in a way that they are all pleasing to the ears with Miku's almost whispery-singing and with the grand use of chimes, piano, and other hymn-like sounds. Their collab albums are always a must-listen.
