PENGUINS PROJECT

mylist | blog | piapro

PENGUINS PROJECT is a unit led by ShisyunkiP. You might remember Pengupro as the composer of the very catchy and well-covered song Chocolate Train.

ShisyunkiP got his P name from one of his compositions Shisyunki Vocaloid. He started uploading songs early 2008 and is continuously composing to this day, although he has started collaborating with artists instead of using Vocaloids. He's been playing the piano since he was a child and his inspiration is Komuro Tetsuya, a Japanese composer regarded a someone who deeply influenced Japanese pop in the 90s.

Penguins Project's music style is straightforward pop, almost anime-ish. His songs, whether they are leaning towards ballads or upbeat dance tracks, always have an of 80s-990s J-pop feel, usually with very catchy beats. His use of instruments is not limited, but most of his songs have electronic base melodies. Despite the upbeat pop beats, the songs usually have very emotional, often sad lyrics.

Penguins Project solely uses Hatsune Miku for his Vocaloid works, but he has recently started collaborating with utaite/singers for their works. His Miku is tuned to sound clear without even a shiver in her voice, with wonderful diction and high range. He has collaborated with singers like Ritsuka and ℃iel.

You can read a long but interesting interview of Penguins Project here. It includes his inspiration for his musical styles, his favorite artists (Pink Floyd!) and his experiences in composing. Site is in Japanese.

Like many others, I first heard of Penguins Project because of "Chocolate Train" and is also one of the first Ps I've encountered when I entered the Vocaloid fandom. I find his songs extremely catchy that even though there aren't many covers for some of them, they still stay stuck. I also like how his songs belong to a single genre, yet they do not sound alike at all. He is also one of the producers I've seen reaching out to foreign fans, which makes him instantly admirable in my book.

As you might remember, I posted the midyear special ranking sometime in July, where the songs included were those uploaded from December 2009 to June 2010. This is the LATTER PART of that ranking, where the top songs from June 15 to December 14, 2010 are uploaded.

The video has 80 songs, but the mylist has 200 songs O_O;. A-anyway, I've included them all in the list. As with the previous mid-year ranking and all the other rankings which aren't weekly, this is written in reverse for more suspense :D.

Since all of them are Miku songs, I'll just type the song, composer and additional Vocaloids used if there are any :).

The last few are so predictable XD;. Anyway, I'll be doing the rest of the rankings, too (how many more to go? D: ) so please wait for them! /o/

...The tags...I...will do them later orz.

This is my first time actually waiting for and transcribing the midyear Vocaloid Ranking, so I'm a bit excited despite the work before me XD.

This ranking considered Hatsune Miku songs uploaded from 12AM of December 15, 2009 up 11:59PM of June 14, 2010. The formula of computing for the ranks is not included in the blurb, but I think it's almost the same as the weekly Vocaloid ranking formula. The video included the top 80 songs, but the mylist link has 478 songs OTL. There's no way I CAN type up all of them so I'll just include here the top 100. There's still the Kagamine, KAITO, Luka and GUMI rankings, so please look forward to them :). Please take this as an opportunity to listen to Hatsune Miku songs considered as the best this half of 2010 :).

So far, this and the annual rankings are the only ones I type in reverse order (from 100-1) so that it'd be more exciting :). If you want me to do the midyear/annual rankings in the traditional way (the 1-xx order), just tell me :).
