[vocaloid spotlight] doriko/KiritanP
Since I've been posting about Nico Nico singers a lot, let's try posting about a producer (P)/composer this time :).
Note: Some Vocaloid composers/producers have two names: their original pseudonym and the one with the "P" sub (P is for producer, I think). Usually, their P names are taken from the song that made them popular. Having a "P" name, I think, means that the producer is recognized by a wide audience. Let's take for example minato (Tolie to some). His pseudonym is really minato, but when he's recognized as a producer/composer, he was dubbed "RyuuseiP" (from his song "Ryuusei" uploaded 01-13-08). So, sometimes I'll be providing two names for the composers, but I'll just be using the one I'm used to using to avoid confusion.
Anyway, we aren't going to talk about minato today XD;. I'm posting about one of my favorite Ps, doriko/KiritanP.
doriko (きりたんP/KiritanP)
| official site | niconico douga mylist |
Doriko got his nickname "Kiritan-P" from his work Miku-ristmas where Miku sang, "Ki~ri~tan~po~". (Kiritanpo is a kind of nabe, I think.) However, his P name is not often used, "doriko" is more popular.
Doriko is dubbed as the "god of Miku ballads" because of his hit ballads. He uses gentle sounds, usually piano and violin accompaniments or not-so-loud band music and combines them with powerful lyrics. Two of his works (Uta ni Katachi wa Nai Keredo and Yuuhizaka) have been released under an independent label. He has also released a CD of his own works, unformed. His works are often in collab CDs/compilation albums of Miku works. You might know him for his work Romeo and Cinderella which is his newest, not to mention most popular, work. So far, he has only used Hatsune Miku in all his works.

SONG LIST
(as of 09-2009)
♬ みっくりすます (Miku-ristmas)
note: This song has two versions, the initial one (11-25-07) and the final one (12-12-2007). I have linked here the final version, which is clearer and better. The song is upbeat but not that remarkable. doriko made use of Jingle Bells here as well as a play on Miku's name to show the Christmas spirit.

♬ ぶちぬけ!2008! (Buchinuke! 2008!)
note: This song was uploaded 12-24-2007, a few days after Miku-ristmas final version was upped. This has none of the ballad feel in doriko's future works. This is more like techno-pop? disco? but on a light, not-hard-on-the-ears melody. It's cute.

♬ 歌に形はないけれど (Uta ni Katachi wa nai Keredo) ♥
note: Released 01-20-08, this is one of doriko-san's most successful works and is also one of my favorites (Thanks for pimping it, Clear XD). I do not understand most of the lyrics, but the melody alone is enough to move the listener. I like the generous use of piano and strings here with the band-like melody in the background. It's true that what attracted me to this song, though, is the emotional renditions of the cover artists (clewota, dasoku, jack) but the Miku version is also very good.

♬ 夕日坂 (Yuuhizaka) ♥
note: This song was upped 03-22-08 and is one of my favorites. I think Miku's voice was really amazing here. The pitching was just right and wasn't abusive of high notes. The melody was also not overdone and did not drown Miku's voice. This is one of the few songs where I actually appreciate Miku's voice without the super high, ear-piercing notes.

♬ 通勤快速 (Tsuukin Kaisoku)
note: This poppish, upbeat song was uploaded 06-26-08. It's reminiscent of Buchinuke! 2008! in terms of its game-like melody and disco-worthy beat. It reminds me of Suzumiya Haruhi, but that's just me. I didn't like it much but I can't say it's bad.

♬ letter song
note: This song was uploaded the same time as Tsuukin Kaisoku. But unlike the previous, it's a ballad. It's not as impressive as Uta ni Katachi wa nai Keredo in my opinion because Miku's voice tend to be whiny in this song. However, the strings are really lovely here, accompanied with piano melody. Miku's voice is also made to be softer and gentler here, it seems.

♬ モノクロアクト (Monochroact) ♥
note: This song was uploaded 08-04-08 and is one of my favorites. There aren't prominent strings or piano here, just band instruments (guitars, drums), so there's a different, alternative feel. Still a ballad, but more upbeat. The message of the song is a bit sad since it's about solitude and having only illusions of love.

♬ Winter Alice
note: This song was uploaded 01-23-09. This song used band + strings + piano accompaniment and an almost alto!Miku. I love the piano melody in this one. However, I have a lingering feeling that Miku's voice wasn't enough to keep up with the melody. Like, the melody is amazing but the voice is lacking? I am not sure, but I'm not that impressed with this song.

♬ ロミオとシンデレラ (Romeo to Cinderella) ♥
note: This song was uploaded 04-06-09 and is one of my favorite Vocaloid songs. It is also one of the most covered/fandubbed Vocaloid songs (along with Roshin Yuukai Meltdown and magnet). No, it's not really a ballad, but I like the melody as well as Miku's vocals surprisingly! The story of the song is also not that hard to grasp. It's about the story of a girl who loves someone (an older guy) her parents doesn't approve of. She then compares herself to Cinderella and Juliet throughout the song. Hatsune Miku sang RomiShin in MikuFes09 along with supercell/ryo's World is Mine :3.
