Producer Thursday: Papiyon/蝶々P

papiyon/蝶々P (chouchoP)

I prefer calling ChouchoP 'papiyon' so as not to confuse them with the singer Choucho. Papiyon is a producer who started uploading songs in 2008, and is moderately active with eleven songs released from 12/2008 up to the present. Their music is hard to identify, but it's mostly upbeat pop with a slice of alternative (guitars, drums, etc.). Their earlier songs remind me of anime songs during the 1990s. You know, those types Garnet Crow, Aucifer, WANDS, etc. sing? Later on, though, they started making more provocative songs bordering on technopop with extensive use of keyboards and repetitive beats. In their most recent upload using Miku Append however, they presented a wonderful ballad reminiscent of the older releases (more drums, etc.).

You might know papiyon as the producer behind the bandwagon hit "Eh? Aa, Sou." XD Papiyon exclusively uses Miku as their vocaloid, with Miku Append later on. Their earlier Miku is lower-pitched and slow. Later on, probably starting with the song "Love Attack Transfer," Miku slowly becomes higher-pitched. I think it's also to adjust to the gradual changes in papiyon's music style.

I first heard of papiyon when they released Love Atomic Transfer and I got hooked on it. The next time I heard the name was in Senaka Awase no Boku to Kimi, which is also very pretty. I do not like all of papiyon's songs, but they make the most interesting melodies. I cannot find a common beat or melody in their works so it's fun listening to them. But what I like best in papiyon's music is the wonderful piano/keyboard music in ALL of their works. The playing is always elaborate at the middle and is very pleasant to listen to, whether it's a technopop, alternative or ballad-based song.
