Utaite Spotlight: Toriko

Toriko is not a new utaite, having uploaded covers since 2008. However she...he... had gained fair popularity with her cover of Unbalance and Himitsu ~Kuro no Chikai~. Since then s/he's gotten satisfactory views and comments in her uploads. To be honest, my first impression of Toriko is that she is a girl. But after being duped by a ton of other utaite and after reading comments from the videos "I love this guy! He's actually a guy??" I'm uh, a bit at a loss now (especially after I watched his/her Eh? Aa, Sou cover). Anyway...I'm sure I'm not the only one confused. Usually, the comments in her videos will be dismissed with "Girl? Guy? It's a lost kid" and "We're all Toriko's slaves" (Toriko no toriko).
Let's address her as a girl for now :D.
Toriko is mostly known for having a boy-ish voice and at the same time a high girly voice. There is no specific way to describe her voice to be honest because she reminds me of a lot of singers: Valshe, Lon, Hitori, even Kogeinu orz. The versatility of her voice allows Toriko to sing wonderfully even at high notes and very low parts. She can also do duets by herself ^^;. The songs she chooses to cover are broad in genre, too. She can sing pop, rock, and even those with hanamogera. She also has her own "counting sheep" upload where she sounds like a cute little girl. One thing that's good with her covers is that s/he always comes up with ways to make them unique from other covers, whether in terms of serifu or way of singing.

You might remember Toriko from the recent rankings as the one who covered that insane MyGodP song Tsureta Otoko to Yume. I'm reminded of Toriko whenseraphictune said she hasn't found her favorite Gallows Bell cover. I remembered Toriko's cover of the song as really good and I checked it out, and everything followed from there. Of course, Toriko is also southerncross's favorite and got spammed about her in the past :P.
I first knew Toriko from her Unbalance cover and liked it, even though I thought she was a newbie. While I didn't like her Himitsu ~Kuro no Chikai~ cover, I loved her Torinoko City rendition...and everything that followed. She has a really wide range not only in pitch but also in the songs she covers. I am mostly amused at the way she covers songs (like her oneesan Nugebai tte mon ja nai) and the reactions she gets in the videos XD.
