Nico Nico Guide III : Basics in Browsing Nicovideo
Normally, you watch videos in Nicovideo by clicking the links posted in various sites. But if you want to browse the site on your own, here are a few basic things you need to know when you do. There is also the very important My Page, which is essential to those who watch live broadcasts and who have joined communities. This is a very basic guide to them and how to use them.
1. Nico Nico Douga Main Page
The new version of the Nico Nico Douga main page looks similar to YAHOO!, with all the important sub-categories, featured stuff and announcement in one page. Look at THIS SCREENCAP for a guide.
- VIDEOS is where you can watch your usual uploads.
- IMAGES is where you'll find fanart and pictures.
- LIVE BROADCASTS or namahousou is where you listen to personalities real time, this includes concerts, live events or simply personal broadcasts.
- APPLICATIONS are games and other miscellaneous stuff you can tinker/play with.
- CHANNELS are grouped namahousou under a label or company.
- ENCYCLOPEDIA is where you can read about personalities, memes and terminologies in NND.
- MARKET has various items for sale.
- ADVERTISEMENTS is the place where you can pay to support/bump/promote your favorite video.
- RL SPOTS list certain TV and RADIO programs and real-time comments to them.
- COMMONS is where you can download works under the creative commons license.
- COMMUNITIES is where you can join various fan groups or official communities of personalities and units.
- NICO NICO DVDs is where you can watch movies while seeing other people's comments on it.
- NICO NICO STORE is where NND-related goods are sold.
- NICO NICO GAMES is where you can play and create games.
- MOBILE is the website for cellphones and other mobile devices\
- NEWS has all the updates and recent information about the site.
The rest are pretty self-explanatory. Note the top bar where you can access your MYPAGE. Click on it and you'll see THIS SCREENCAP.
2. MY PAGE
Again, you'll be seeing THIS SCREENCAP in your interface when you access your mypage. My Page is an important part of your Nico Nico Douga stay because it has EVERYTHING you need to organize, schedule and remember your activities.
The top bar has your name, your ID number as well as your status if you're a free or paid user, your EXP points which you earn by doing various things in the site, and your Nico Nico points which you need to watch concerts and certain events (you can buy it using the same method as paying for a paid account).
Your left column has your user icon (if you uploaded any), the link to your public profile as well as the option to fill it out and set which can be seen by other people, your account preferences and your payment preferences if you are to pay for a paid account.
The lower part has your menu. When you click on one, their contents will appear on the large space at the right:
- NICO NICO REPORT contains all the recent activities from people you follow, communities you've joined and friends you have followed.
- MYLIST has all your mylist folders as well as your recent additions to them.
- WATCHLIST lists all the activities of the people you put in your watch list.
- COMMUNITIES lists all the communities you have joined as well as the recent activities in them.
- CHANNELS lists all the channels you have subscribed to as well as the recent activities in them.
- UPLOADED VIDEOS are all the videos you have uploaded yourself in NND.
- STAMP LOG is your collection of stamps, which you earn by doing certain activities in the site.
- FRIENDS lists all your friends, of course.
- ACTIVITY LOG lists EVERYTHING you've done in the site from the videos you've watched to the videos you have mylisted, etc.
The lowest part of the left column has the ongoing namahousou listed. Clicking on the link at the lowest part will give you a full list of the namahousou you've timeshifted, namahousou which are ongoing and namahousou that you can timeshift (from communities you've joined only).
The rest are pretty self-explanatory w.
3. Watching a Video
Now that we're done with the main page and your my page, let's do some searching. Here's a typical results page when you search for a term (in this case, "magnet").

Pardon the small size. Anyway, when you search for something and it generates a lot of results, there are various ways to arrange the results depending on how you want them. The options are in the drop-down box at the top of the video lists. This is a closer look plus their translations:

When you click on a video, this is what you'll see. Click for larger size.

The top part, which is not seen, includes the TITLE of the video, the COMMUNITY which the uploader belongs to, plus the BLURB or uploader's notes. The notes usually include the uploader's MYLIST, the original video if the video is a cover, other sites related to the uploader and credits for images, videos and other stuff. At the rightmost part, you'll see the name of the uploader plus a link to his/her profile.
The topmost part of the video lists the tags. Tags, some of them, are important because they have the singer name, the category name and other information you need to know about the video which can help you in looking for related videos. You can click on the tags for similar videos. The red icons beside them lead to Nicopedia entries on them, if they have any.
The right part of the tags has three buttons. One is for support (where you will pay for the video's bump/promotion), the mylist button (where you can mylist the video to a folder you assigned) and the temporary mylist button which just mylists the video outside your folders. You can assign it to a proper folder later on in your MYPAGE.
The rest are pretty self-explanatory. You can type your comments in the white box under the video. You can read the comments at the right side of the video. NG Comments are those viewers marked as offensive and rude. BTW, at the bottom of the video part, right above the comment bar, you'll see these options:

The first one allows you to loop the video endlessly (if you are a premium account). The second option (the dialog cloud with ....) allows you to turn scrolling comments on and off. The third one changes the size of the video window and the last one opens the video on a separate page.
The bar below the comment box has your list of applications. When you click on one, you can play it on the side (over the comments) while the video is playing. The bar lower than the Nico apps are those buttons you can use to share the video.
- MEMORY is for remembering comments in the video that you like. When you click on it, the video will reload but each comment will have a checkbox. You check the comment/s you like, click confirm and it'll be saved in your list.
- EMBED is a page containing various ways for you to embed the video on your site. Note that not all websites can embed nicovids.
- MIXI Check is embedding the nicovideo in your mixi.
- TWEET is of course, tweeting a link to your account. You need to enroll your twitter account to be able to do this option.
ETA: For Firefox (Greasemonkey needed) or Google Chrome users, you can install this script on your browsers which translates a lot of the parts of the Nico Nico Douga interface.
And those are probably the only things you have to know when watching videos in Nico Nico Douga. There are other options like Osusume (or ADS) and related videos, but you'll get to know them later on as you explore the site :)!
Thank you for the help!

So, what is a net ticket? Does it require paying real life money? I will try to get any stamps that don't require spending actual money to do or get something.
What is a namahousou?
So I've tried logging in to NicoVideo on my mobile, but all it does when I log in is take me back to the main page as if I'd never logged in at all. Is this because it's required for you to link your PC and mobile in order to be able to view a video on a mobile?
And continuing from the above, how do you link a PC and mobile?
Where does one find these applications?
Frequent visitor to the NicoVideo website in general? So as of how many visits (say I visit once per day) am I considered frequent, exactly?
What is a Niconama Alert?

A net ticket when you purchase the ability to view an online concert. You have to pay unless you get someone else to buy it for you and gift it to you. But yeah :( Moneys.
What is a namahousou?
It's just what we call live/streaming broadcasts on nico nico douga and here on ofurotaimu. It pretty much translates to that. They're usually shown on http://live.nicovideo.jp and feature both official and user hosted broadcasts. We have a guide on them here.

Hmmmmm I'm not entirely sure. I can't remember how I did it. I don't recall having a problem logging in from my phone. Have you tried using the mobile site or a nico nico douga mobile app?
Where does one find these applications?
You can access apps from http://app.nicovideo.jp/ or the アプリ section at the top bar of the main page. Also you can access advertised ones or ones you've have downloaded under the comments section of a video. Just click on the boxes with little pictures on them like this. These apps are usually just flash games.

I have no clue OTL. I log in everyday, and sometimes am on there for hours. I'll try looking around to see if there's a stamp guide out there.
What is a Niconama Alert?
Look at our guide on namahousou, section II. Alerts here.

I think I just tried the regular NicoVideo site, what's the URL for the mobile one?
I tried looking for a stamp guide, in english, but couldn't find anything.
And I'm reading your guide now, thanks. :)
no subject
The URL for the mobile site is http://sp.nicovideo.jp/
The way I arrive first to a live broadcast is that I go on broadcast of not very well known users. When Nico Alert tells me this person has started a broadcast, I immediately click on it, or if this person tweets a link on their twitter account. It's very difficult for very popular broadcasts, but ones by people unknown people sometimes only have 10-15 people viewing.

Oh thanks!
Could you maybe tell me of one such user?
no subject
To get the frequent visitor stamp, you need to visit every day (1 stamp) or almost everyday (a different stamp)
Unfortunately I don't browse broadcasts much nowadays, so the lesser known people I knew back then have either disappeared or are more popular now :( But what you can do is try browsing around the broadcasts and clicking on broadcasts with no people in them. For example, here's the Yattemita section http://live.nicovideo.jp/recent?tab=try
