An Intro To Utattemita (Anime Approach)

fascinates"Utattemita", while literally meaning "tried to sing", is more popularly known as a sub-category in the website Nico Nico Douga, which is very much like Youtube (just better). In this category, you'll find singers (utaite) who upload their covers of songs. Some of them upload originals, but it is rare that you'll find them in the utattemita category (usually it's in the Indies).
Most people would connect the Nico Nico Douga utattemita community to Vocaloid songs, since most of the utaite (singers) there cover Vocaloid songs. However, utattemita is much more than that. Earlier, when Vocaloid was not the in-thing in NND, singers cover all types of songs: anime/J-music, Western music, songs from musicals, etc. While it is not apparent at present, some utaite still do cover songs like these from time to time.
This primer is directed towards people who want to get to the utattemita fandom but have no knowledge of Vocaloid. Under the cut is a list of prominent utaite who have covered anime songs either in their earlier years as a singer or as a tribute to certain events (like the 90's anime matsuri). I think it would be easier for non-Vocaloid fans to grasp the anime side of utattemita first before delving in deeper into the fandom.

Final note: There are MANY anime covers in the utattemita section but they are a bit harder to find than Vocaloid songs. These are just my favorites. If you like a certain singer, feel free to check their mylists for their other covers. Among those mentioned above, some that had gone professional are clear, Piko, Valshe and halyosy. Most of the list have also released cover/original albums in various events and in online shops. I hope that somehow you've find people you're interested in (if you're a newbie) or that you've discovered new songs (if you're an old fan) through this post :).
