[Translation] PointFive (.5) Axive Interview
This is another interview article which is a bit hard to translate, so apologies if I took too long. Dasoku and Asamaru sounded too happy/drunk, IDK LOL. PUPI has walls of text for answers so I hope you'll forgive me for summarizing his answers and using a lot of liberty with translating. Thanks!
Everyone here is popular in the site Nico Nico Douga. However, for first time viewers or people new to the site, please introduce yourselves.
Dasoku: I'm Dasoku, 33 years old and single. Other than that, there's nothing else. (someone chimes in "aren't you hunting for a wife?") Err not really. I assure you that I want to get married, but I'm not really doing anything about it. I just wish for it (LOL).
Clear: I'm Clear, I upload covers of songs in Nico Nico Douga. Please treat me well. Other than that, there's really nothing in particular... Yeah, nothing else.
Amu: I'm Amu, and I also contribute covers in Nico Nico Douga. Lately I'm into gaming. I play from net games to PlayStation 3.
Mi-chan: Hello, I'm Mi-chan. I think I'm the youngest member of this group. I'm 22 years old. Right now I'm into Monster Hunter 3.
Asamaru: I'll destroy that illusion! (Everyone laughs) I'm Asamaru. I sing, support people, talk, play games and enjoy a lot of things (in Nico Nico Douga).
PUPI: I am primarily responsible for the sound production in PointFive. I mix songs by various people in Nico Nico Douga, although I also do recordings by myself which are a capella-like and in which I do all the voices myself. I like a capella works very much.
SunaP: I am the recording director for PointFive. I also submit works in Nico Nico Douga, although by organizing this unit I've met a lot of other people and it's fun.
In continuation of SunaP's talk about Pointfive, would you give us more details regarding PointFive's formation?
PUPI: Initially, SunaP and I were sempai-kouhai in university and we did some stuff together. And at this time, Nico Nico Douga activities are at it's peak so we gathered some utaite (singers) and asked them if they'd like to do something interesting. Albums released through Nico Nico Douga are numerous and the singers here have also released some of their own albums but those are just mostly compilation CDs. So we thought it would be fun if we try releasing a CD with a group. So we first decided on making a chorus group. We approached some of the utaite we have met in the site and asked them if they would cooperate with us. For the time being we decided on a chorus group but everyone has done it intently and earnestly.
When you were invited to be part of the group by PUPI-san, what did you feel?
Dasoku: I felt something like, "Well, if PUPI calls me out then it can't be helped, let's do it!"
Clear: When I was first approached I thought of nothing of a chorus group, I just thought I was invited to release a CD with everyone. So, I was thinking it would be like the Omnibus CDs. But talking with everyone now harmoniously, I really feel that I'm actually part of a group making a CD together and I thought it's really fun. I haven't until now.
Amu: I thought, "If PUPI says so...". At first I wasn't really interested when I was told of the project but as we continued, it has become something I cannot decline.
Asamaru: I thought, "Eh? Why me?" (LOL)
Mi-chan: I just said "Okay" without thinking (LOL). Now it seems like a serious project but that time it was more of light talk because everyone here are my acquaintances.
When did your talks about this group occur?
PUPI: Sometime end of February this year.
Comparing to that time to now, did everyone get along better or was there better unity?
Mi-chan: Nothing much has changed, really (LOL).
Is that so? So you've come this way without changing your feelings from the start?
Mi-chan: Yes, it's a good sense of distance.
Concerning Select Me:
Then, let's move on to talk about your first single "Select Me". Could you please tell us your feelings from when you first heard this song up to the recording?
Dasoku: The first time I heard of it, I had a lot of impressions but generally I thought the song was interesting. During recording I finished it without mishaps or any particular issues. It was a success, if I should say.
Clear: From the time I first listened to the song until after we recorded it, I thought, we didn't need to have especially sung this song (Everyone laughs). Because the song itself, even before we sang it, is perfect already. It could have been sung by halyosy-san, who composed the song. But having been told by halyosy-san that everyone sang the song excellently, I feel happy.
Amu: Upon listening to it for the firs time, I thought it's a very autumn-y song. And it's generally a peaceful song? Although at some parts it tends to be a bit hot... I really liked it upon the first listen. I was glad to have received such a well-written song.
Mi-chan: When I first heard the song, I felt like Clear and thought I'd never release a CD like this. During the recording I affixed an image to the song so I was able to do well. I really like where it's said in the song "Koi momiji somare". Because it means a lot of things, right? Like how ears become red like autumn leaves? I like that image.
Asamaru: From the time I received the song, I sang it at the top of my lungs at home. I was dying to sing it. Complaints from the neighbors came (LOL).
You practiced by singing at the top of your lungs?
Asamaru: Yes. It's not something I can sing quietly, so yes (LOL). Recently, I've become more quiet, but really I was happy to have received such a wonderful song.
By the way, is the recording for everyone separate?
PUPI: No, since we want to hear how the harmony will turn out, we made it a point to record simultaneously. There are some constraints when it comes to the studio, but we try as much as we can to record together.
With regards to Clear and Dasoku's "Love Atomic Transfer"...
Dasoku-san and Clear-san have covered "Love Atomic Transfer", how was it?
Dasoku: Clear-kun lowered his key so it was hard, right?
Clear: Yeah. It was hard because I lowered my key but somehow I followed Dasoku-san's lead and did my best. We did some adlib arrangement in the first part of the song, but I thought it sounds cool.
Dasoku: It depends on how they think.
With regards to Clear-san, is it hard for you to use a lower key in singing? Do you generally do the opposite?
Clear: Yes, it's difficult. I do not usually sing songs in such a low key. I tell myself "I'm Dasoku-san!" and I practiced singing in low key in that mood before recording.
Then, Clear-san's low voice is an important part to hear (in this album)?
Clear: Yes, I would like to think that way.
With regards to Amu, Asamaru and Mi-chan's "Shounen Ginga"...
The three of you covered "Shounen Ginga", how was it?
Mi-chan: The three of us have different voices: one good at high notes, one with medium pitch and one with deep tone. I think the part to hear in this song is how our voices are mixed together to sound good.
Were there any difficulties during recording?
Asamaru: I love the song, I love the song to death. I love the song so much so I kept an ideal, something like "I want to sing in this manner" while recording. But I can't record that smoothly all the time, so I think the hard part is trying my best to firmly be as close to my ideal as possible.
With regards to the PV...
The limited edition of the CD has a music video compiled with it. What are your thoughts on the MV?
PUPI: The ones who did the motion for the Pointfive characters in the MV were actually SunaP and myself. I've been hearing about motion capture before but I don't really know how they go about. So it was a good experience.
SunaP: It's disgustingly cute, right.
PUPI: We were forced to drop some scenes because of the limit, right.
What relation do the CG characters have with the boy and girl in the story?
PUPI: In this case, PointFive are key chains belonging to the boy. Since he cannot confess his feelings properly, they are there to cheer him on.
Mi-chan: We were supporting him from below and all and after he got dumped, we were kind of doing something unnecessary (Everyone laughs).
It's very RL, getting rejected, right?
Mi-chan: It is, isn't it? Dreaming of something unreachable is real. But I think that is the good part.
Well, then for the last part, please leave a message for your fans who are reading this article right now.
Dasokuu: Yay~ are you reading this? l-lol wtf dsk...
Clear: Each PointFive member does solo works but including that and this project, please take care of us!
Amu: Because of everyone, we're able to release a second project. Thank you very much and take care of us from now on.
Mi-chan: We have solo works and then we have this project, and I've enjoyed doing all of them so I hope people will enjoy our works as well.
Asamaru: After this and as much as possible, I hope to receive everyone's warm feelings. Please take care of us.
PUPI: With the singers and myself gathering, we have created some interesting sounds. And after this we plan on continuing doing that, so please take care of us.
SunaP: Everyone has really done their best in this project, and if anyone here who's reading this thinks "I haven't heard of them before", please do give us a listen.
