Aisu / あいす

mylist | mixi

Aisu is a new Nico singer, having started uploading his covers only December of last year. He only has a few covers up, but he's slowly gaining a following mainly because of his cover of ShounenT's "orange".

Aisu is one of the many guys comprising the ikemen-voiced subgroup in utattemita XD. His voice is gentle, smooth and a bit on the thin, mid-ranged side. He sounds similar to Keysuke, ShounenT, Iinchou, etc. One interesting thing is that he sounds entirely different when singing upbeat/rockish songs and when singing ballads. It's like he uses his fuller voice to capture the power of rock songs and mellows down a bit for slower ones. He also sometimes uses autotune to a moderate level and he is one of those folks who sound impressive even in autotune.

sample songs:
orange (ShounenT original)
Black Gold (otetsu original)
Kurisumasu nanka iranai (Nashimotowe original)
Pokerface (YuchaP original)
Babylon (Tohma original)

nikki says
Somehow, I have this knack of finding new people with good ikemenish voices similar to ShounenT LOL (I learned about ShounenT the same way, too, back when he was still spazzing about idolizing Clear). Aisu refused to stick with me the first time, because I thought he was lacking force in his voice and his first works were all rock, so I was unimpressed. But as I listened to more of his covers, specifically Black Gold and orange, I slowly came to admire his voice and his tenacity in singing strong songs. He has a really beautiful voice and he hasn't fully used his potential to sing yet, so I look forward to more of his works later on and watch him improve. My favorite song by him though, is his only ballad, and I wish he'd sing more ballads because they sound so adorable.

akio / あきお

mylist | community | twitter

Akio is a relatively unknown singer in Nico Nico Douga and has been uploading songs for less than a year, so far. His first upload was sometime in October 2010. In the span of 7 months the quality of his uploads have increased dramatically, and after listening to his latest upload, dateken's "Never", I just had the urge to write a spotlight about him.

Akio has uploads from various genres (including crack-y stuff XD) but he seems to like singing songs that are supposedly more suited for female singers, and he's really rather good at singing them. He has an "otoko ga utatte mo ii yo ne?!" (it's okay even if a guy sings this, right?!) series of songs and with his singing, I would definitely say it's perfectly fine that he sang them, lol. I would describe his voice as more of the smooth and clear type, but more than the type that's suited for ballads, I believe it's more suited for R&B-ish dance-ish jazzy-ish songs.

He mixes his own songs and his improvement in this area is what makes his newer uploads noticeably better than the older ones. It seems he is also able to rap and play the guitar, though, for most of his uploads, he just sings.

sample songs
[newer stuff]
Never (dateken)
Prayer will live (yuukiss)
Mr. Music (various Ps)
Unko [collab with gurow]

[older stuff]
Roshin Yuukai JunK Arrange (iroha/kuma; "JunK Arrange" by rerulili)
Panda Hero (hachi)
Kimi ni Todoke [he plays the guitar here]

deza says
I first encountered Akio's stuff through his "otoko ga utatte mo ii yo ne?!" version of Tete-a-tete. I didn't get to listen to him again for quite a while 'til i chanced upon his tweet announcing another one of his "otoko utatte mo ii yo ne?!" songs entitled "Prayer Will Live". I never heard that song before and when I listened to his version, I was just... surprised. Pleasantly so. lol. It was just... so good. I already pegged him to be good at singing, which is why I followed him on twitter, but the overall quality was just really far from the last thing I listened to from him and, yeah, I was surprised. XD
Though... I may be biased since I really like his voice itself, but I really do believe his singing is very good. X3 I also love his love for crack along with gurow, who seems to be his friend? lol. Quality takai unk, lolol.

Ahhh, anyway, my head is always a mess of thoughts running around disjointed in chaos, so I will stop ranting before the lack of coherence sets in, if it hasn't already~ /o/

Bis / びす

mylist | community

Bis is a very prolific male singer in Nico Nico Douga, having started only June last year with Sandscraper, but has uploaded more than 80 covers (that means he uploads every few days or so XD). His dedication and love for covering songs is apparent in his choice of covers. He isn't biased towards any specific genre, style or producer. Because of this, he has become quite popular in the community and his songs have gained various receptions. His most popular song to date is his cover of Kagefumi Etranger.

Bis's voice is thin and has a wide range. In some of his covers, he's often likened to Yuu, because of their uncanny ability to make a song sound creepy mysterious and cool at the same time. Just because his voice is thin, though, doesn't mean it doesn't have the power or force, since he can sing Vocarock songs really well. His earlier works were more towards Vocarock, but recently he's taken a liking to singing fast-paced, confusing songs which kind of became his forte. For the record, his screamo's pretty awesome like in Otona no Omocha. He also has the tendency to sound pretty amazing in a high girly voice, like in Charon.

In the one year that he has been singing, his improvement as well as his choice of music has developed and expanded well.

sample songs
E? Aa, Sou. (papiyon original)
DYE (AVTechNO! original)
Sakurazensen Ijou Nashi (WataruP)
Anti the Infinite Holic (cosMo original)
Migi Hidari (koushirou original)
Chocolate (otetsu original)
7/8 (yuyoyuppe original)

sample collab
Risky Game (with rick; KurousaP original)
Perfect Crime (with leychal; samfree original)

nikki says
I first encountered Bis in the Utattemita Rankings and I have found a liking for his cover of EAS, despite the tons of covers out there. When I decided that I also liked his Sakurazensen cover (which not many people can cover properly), I've followed all most of his works ever since. I find it great that he's good in screamo, singing in English...basically anything he covers is good. He's a bit hard to follow because he uploads like every other day, but it was fun seeing how he'd cover different styles of songs, especially those not in the vocarock/screamo/fast-paced songs category. (He has a Peropero cover, I mean XD). I'm often in wonder as to how he can cover songs and upload that fast without making the quality of his songs suffer. It's pretty awesome. I...can't name a single favorite because he has many songs and I love more than half of them, but right now my constant loop is his 7/8. :)

Yuuda / 雄大 / ゆ~だ

mylist
| other mylist | community | blog | mixi | twitter

Yuuda started uploading his works to Nico Nico Douga around mid-2008. He may not be very well-known but you may remember him as the one behind the mind-blowing operatic version of Servant of Evil or as the epic chorus behind Koge's Kumo no Iseki. One of Yuuda's distinct qualities is his rich, deep, operatic-type voice that seems to suit traditional or classical songs but which he breaks out with in the most unexpected songs, adding a new twist. To be honest, Yuuda's deep resounding voice fits with the big-band type songs too. His voice has been compared to that of Fukuyama Masaharu's and after looking him up, I admit I can see why Yuuda's style reminds listeners of Fukuyama, whose low-pitched crooning is similar to Yuuda's.

He could probably contend for the category of deep-so-sexy-i-died voices, reaching eroi proportions :D (sorry, taking that from the comments/shot lol) He's really talented at doing opera-ish songs or arranging ordinary songs into classical arrangements and they really suit his "mature" voice and puts his strong vibrato to use. Well to put it, he's covered opera-ish songs too and they are downright awe-inducing. Operatic is all I have been talking about, but it's really his defining feature, the way his voice soars up and swoops down is so powerful *q*
Thus far, Yuuda has also composed one song with Hatsune Miku (it's so cute *__*)

sample songs (covers):

「letter song」 (doriko original)
Tsuki Yuki Hana (Ebot original)
Paradoxical Paradigm (Ebot original)
Flower Tail (yuukiss original)
Matryoshka (hachi original)
Lilium (Elfin Lied OP)

sample songs (works):
Chiisana Seiya no Tegami (A Little Christmas Eve Letter)

I first heard of Yuuda through his Servant of Evil cover and thought it was so awesome *__* an operatic arrangement! I love classical music too so hearing this arrangement made me really happy~ Yuuda's unique voice & style is so refreshing and just kinda makes my ears explode from the awesomeness. I really love his covers of Ebot's songs because his voice is rich enough to fit into the role *__* while other ikemen voices might be lovely~ they can't really fulfill the mantle of Tsuki Yuki Hana and Paradoxical Paradigm for me like Yuuda's voice does. His deep voice fits traditional-type songs perfectly but I like his takes on other works too! (lol operatic Matryoshka). Hope you enjoy Yuuda and all his wonderfulness~

Ritsuka / リツカ

Mylist | Twitter | Blog

Ritsuka is a prolific female utaite who began uploading in February 2008. She has a soft, gentle voice that can reach high notes seemingly with ease and without being hard on the ears. She can also sing in a cutesy way, but it does not feel fake or forced. She can sing pop songs very well, but I find her ballads exceptionally good. She covers mostly vocaloid songs, but has a lot of anime song covers as well. Ritsuka also has covers of Sound Horizon songs and has participated in the Sound Horizon cover band Acostoria Her breakout hit was her cover of Meltdown, and still remains to be her most popular upload. Some of her songs were mixed by Asamaru (such as her Meltdown), however she likely mixes most of her songs (since they do not have a mixer credited). Ritsuka is a regular member of EastNewSound, a Touhou arrange group.

Ritsuka most often does collaborations with Mitani Nana, and has worked with other artists in making original songs. She is also part of a music unit called “Quee Quee” with PENGUINS PROJECT and Aki. You can buy their first album digitally in many countries via iTunes and Amazon’s mp3 store.

She also writes songs and she posted a list of songs she has written on her blog. She also wrote some of the songs on Penguin Project's Quee Quee. Her songwriting style matches her voice, and the songs are light, calming, and sometimes upbeat.

She also provides the vocals for the image song “Clear Note” for Rodoku Shoujo, a Japanese audiobook reading application for the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch. Like Quee Quee, you can purchase the song digitally at iTunes and you can see the PV here. Interestingly, you can even download the app for free at iTunes.

Ritsuka is one my first female utaites, and still remains to be one of my favorites. I find her voice so cute, yet it never gets on my nerves. Her more energetic songs can be hit or miss for me, but her singing ability still impresses me. I'm more biased towards her ballads, which I think suits her voice perfectly. I had to restrain myself from listing a gazillion ballads under the sample songs list XD. My favorite song from her is still celluloid, it makes me tear up sometimes :’D.

To be honest, before I wrote this spotlight, I had not listened to her entire mylist, it's so long! But going through her songs, I found so many good covers and I wish I could list them all. I'll spare you guys this time. Recently I can't stop looping her cover of Mami's Theme from Madoka Magica.

I also find her doodles so cute (twitpic), she even drew the art for her Popopo~n cover.

EDIT(06/25/2011): I added a little bit more information here and there in this post after getting more info :) Sorry for the inconsistency!

Kurod / くろど

mylist | nico community | twitter

I am sure anyone who nama surfs has been tricked into this guy’s nama at least once because of the ridiculously cute smiling cat picture...... Anyways, although Kurod is more of a nama nushi than a utaite, a few of his recent uploads did pretty well in the weekly rankings so I thought he was probably due for a spotlight.

While the genres and range he can cover are limited, when he sings songs that go well with his voice, he can manage to sound very smooth and on occasion, even eroi. His most famous cover would be a mash-up of 1925 and Al Dente. Kurod has been uploading since 2007 and has been doing namas for a little over a year now. His older uploads really don’t do him justice, he has improved quite a bit and you will have to listen to his namas to hear to the difference.

He namas often and always at around the same time so they are pretty easy to catch. Just be warned that his namas are........full of Abe san/gachi homo jokes and can get slightly R-18. He has the tendency to breathe heavily into the mic or go “chucchu peropero”. His listeners are also super DoS so do not be alarmed by how rude the comments are.

sample songs

JBF piano ver.
(he only uploaded this to twitter)
1925 x Aldente

E? Aa, sou (ChouchouP original)
Chichi wo Moge

I was one of the people that got tricked by the cat picture, and then joined his community because of how ridiculous he sounded singing よっしゃあ漢唄 (Yosshaa Kan Uta?). I think his voice is actually kind of interesting and I can’t think of anyone to compare it to. It’s also funny that he sounds better singing live compared to his uploads. Personally, I think Kurod is someone fans like more for the crack than for the actual singing.

Yurin / ゆりん

mylist | nico community | blog | mixi community

Yurin is a very prolific utaite, having uploaded over 50 covers despite having started just last year in January. Because he has tons of covers, his growth and development as an utaite is also apparent and it's amazing how much he had improved within just months.

Yurin's voice is thin and very boyish, which is why you might think that he prefers singing ballads and pop songs, but actually it's the opposite. Yurin seems to prefer popular rock songs a lot and he is very good at singing them. His wide vocal range gives him quite an edge and he sounds wonderful even if the song is really high. He carries each song well because of his ability to sing in both very low and very high notes. Even without the thickness of voice usually found in strong singers, he has a slight, recognizable edge of roughness in his voice that helps him give force in upbeat and rock songs. In terms of voice quality, he's like a cross between Keysuke and Amu.

His almost permanent duet partner is Kano. He has A LOT of covers, but it's obvious that he prefers songs by yukkedoluce, hachi, HoehoeP and he likes jumping popular song bandwagons, which is why his songs are often overshadowed even if he sounds amazing in them.

sample songs (solo)
Maigo Life (NishizawasanP original)
Kimi ga Suki (yukkedoluce original)
Badbye (Koman original)
Rinne (Hachi original)
Last Last (VocaliodP original)

sample songs (duet)
Monocross Road (with Kano feat. Marco)
Suki Kirai (with Kano)
Antidichlorobenzene x Paradichlorobenzene (with Kano)

nikki says
I actually got to know Yurin when Yukkedoluce spazz-tweeted about him covering "Reflect". Yurin's covers are very hit-or-miss for me. However, he is one of those utaite I've watched grow/improve and if you listen to his covers starting from the earliest to the recent, you can see the apparent improvement not only on his vocal range, but in the quality of his uploads, too. And I think he'll keep on improving in terms of vocal quality and popularity XD.

Tsukinoha / Tsukinowa / 月葉

mylist | blog | mixi comm

If you haven't heard of Tsukinowa in solo, you might remember her as Yuki's part in Rerulili's Mr. Music.

Tsukki, as she is fondly called, started her utaite career early in 2009. However, she only uploads occasionally so she's not often seen or heard of. However, most of her songs have a lot of views and she also has a following. Most would say it's because of her incredible loli voice, but I think it's more of her versatility.

Most of Tsukki's songs are upbeat songs with pop/jazz cute beats. And while it's true that she uses her high-pitched loli voice a lot, it's not the only pitch she can do. She actually has a very womanly voice sometimes reminiscent of Kakichoco. She also has a good range and can sing very high and very low pitches as each song dictates. Sometimes she reminds me of Lon, just that Lon can sound both like a teen girl and a little boy, while Tsukinowa can sound like a little girl and a woman.

sample songs
Last Song (original by fatmanP)
crack (original by keeno)
Marionette Syndrome (original by scop)
clock lock works (original by hachi)
Yubikiri (original by scop)

nikki says
I first heard of Tsukki in her marvelous cover of "Marionette Syndrome". However, I haven't followed her works until she uploaded one of my favorite FatmanP songs "Last Song" followed by the collaboration "Mr. Music". I am usually not a fan of loli voices because they sound so fake, but Tsukki can pull it off well without sounding annoying. I love her more mature voice, though, since she can sing to the fullest with it.

Shin Shakaijin / 新社会人

mylist | community | blog

Shin Shakaijin, or Shin Syakaijin, started uploading his covers in Nico Nico Douga around mid-2008. At first, he covered songs from anime like Macross, but eventually, he started singing covers of Vocaloid songs and continues to do so until now. He is pretty open to covering parody songs and is known for covering virtually anything, from ballads to rock songs to jazz to insanely cracked songs.

His voice is rough, with a wide range and power (if he wants to). His voice quality is quite similar to Faneru's with a bit of Buzzpanda's ballad side. His singing might turn people off a bit because he does rough and slightly messy renditions of the originals, although that doesn't mean they suck. He tends to use a lower pitch with a drawl slightly on the eroi side when doing ballads, but when singing rock songs he increases the pitch up a little and uses a bit more force with pretty impressive shouts. He is often praised for his control over high and long shouts/notes as well as for having an "ikevoice".

In each of his covers, there will be a screen at the end of the song where he says "to everyone who listened up to the end, ajujushita♪ (最後まで聞いてくれてあじゅじゅした♪). He is also very fond of sweets and confesses to like girls in school swimsuits... You can hear him speak in this video.

sample songs

Eh? Aa, Sou. (papiyon original)
Tokarev to Shoujo (MochiibeP original)

collaborations

Saa, Docchi? (with Airi; Hinata Haruhana original)
Sakura no Ame (with Keysuke, Hosaka and Senra; halyosy original)

I have been hearing Shin Shakaijin a lot in the utattemita fandom, but the time I decided to listen to all his works and subsequently like him was when I heard him sing "Hoshizora ni Negai wo Komete" in the utattemita album "Starry Sky". He sounded awesome there and since then I've been following his covers. I'd lump him with Buzzpanda in my playlist, but while their voices are both on the rough side, they have different singing approaches. But still, Shinshaka's voice is quite relaxing, even if he's singing Loli Yuukai /shot. I have so many favorites in his works, but my first will still be his song in Starry Sky.

Yorukichi isn’t a very well known singer and has only been around since June 2010. I found out about him through [personal profile] the_desserter *ahem* and fell in love with his cover of Yubikiri. He has already covered quite a few songs and he has covered them well. I would say that his voice is like a mix of Gero and Miichan, strong and..rough? Manly? Emakkoii? 8D lol.

His range isn’t great but his harmonies are always amazing. He tends to sing rock-ish songs which match his voice really well. If you listen to his covers, you will notice that he loves to add a twist and slightly rearrange them. This makes listening to his covers always fun in its own way. Sadly he hasn’t been doing namas very often lately :(
