Last weekend, the_desserter and I were talking about HoehoeP/Nanou and his singing skills and eventually, it kind of branched out to producers in the utattemita category. Hence, this post is born XD.

Producers are known in the Vocaloid part of Nico Nico Douga as the composers, lyricists and Vocaloid tuners. But not many people know that a lot of producers also sing (either in the utattemita section only or in the whole doujin scene). Sometimes they sing covers of their own songs (self-covers) or songs of other Vocaloid producers. You may know one producer who sings covers of songs, you know, Tourai (minato/RyuuseiP)? XD He's one of the few who uses a different name for his covers, but that was because he was named Tourai/Tolie/Turai even before he admitted that he's minato ^^;.

Here are some of the producers who also upload their songs. Most of them have rearranged versions of the songs they are covering, sometimes just accompanied by guitar (they sound awesome, btw XD). These are some that I know of, but there are a lot more producers who upload their own singing, so if you know of them, please do inform me in the comments :3. The songs I used are just samples, though. Please visit their mylists for more.

For a proper intro, please read the Miku ranking here. The duet/group/outsider ranking has only 95 songs, which is sad. By outsider, BTW, they mean those Vocaloids who aren't Miku, Len/Rin, KAITO, MEIKO, Luka, GUMI, Gakupo, Miki, Kiyoteru and Yuki as well as UTAU.

So far, this and the annual rankings are the only ones I type in reverse order (from 100-1) so that it'd be more exciting :). If you want me to do the midyear/annual rankings in the traditional way (the 1-xx order), just tell me :).

For a proper intro, please read the Miku ranking here. Gakupo only has 70 songs in his ranking. Let's go~!

You might notice that some of the titles/P names are still in Japanese. It's because I'm not sure how to romanize them correctly.

We're back! Sorry for the delay, but I'll be sure to update the spotlights regularly from now on~. Anyway, on with producer thursday :).

なおぽ/Naopo

mylist | piapro | website

Our producer for today has started his Vocaloid career during the latter partof 2008. You might have known Naopo or Naoki as he calls himself, as the producer who did a rearranged version of Melt using Gakupo. Or that rearranged version of Roshin Yuukai. Yes, you might have heard of him but he is not as popular as other prolific producers. Naopo has done so many songs and rearrangements of other songs that I can't decide which to use for this entry ^^;.

Anyway, Naopo's music is dominantly what I like to call fantasy rock. Most of his songs are upbeat with a common rhythm, surrounded by bells/chimes, piano and violin melody aside from the usual drums and bass. Whatever the instrument or Vocaloid he uses, his music has this distinct magical feel.

Naopo's main Vocaloid is Gakupo, although he also uses Miku, Luka and Len. Recently, he has also taking a liking to using GUMI, much to my pleasure :). Gakupo is probably the one he has mastered tuning the most, he sounds amazing in his recent releases. Luka sounds shaky at times, but because her voice is low, she melds with Naopo's music well. Len sounds okay, but when combined with Gakupo, he sounds really good, probably because of the contrasting tone. I haven't listened much to his Miku, but his GUMI is very promising. Naopo's GUMI can reach high notes without faltering or losing to the rockish backgrounds.

Aside from being a producer, Naopo also sings. Not that much covers, but I find his covers very amusing. He tends to make his covers really rockish XD;. One proof is his rather hardcore rockish cover of Another: Shiroi Yuki no Princess wa XD. My favorite cover by him would be Flightless Bird. It sounds so cool, doesn't it? *q*

sample songs
Hades (Gakupo)
Requiem ~Senmetsu no Shi~ (Luka)
Kagerou (Gakupo x Len)
Akuma no Tsubuyaki (Gakupo x GUMI)
Haitoku to Tsumi (Gakupo x Len x GUMI)

I'm really surprised that Naopo is not a popular producer since he composes wonderful, enchanting music (I mean that in a rock/alternative sense) and tunes his Vocaloids perfectly, not to mention his PVs has very interesting art. I think what I like most in his songs are the catchy intro with violins and chimes. I also like how he can combine so many sounds in one song and not make the sounds appear scattered or messy. In the last sample song above (the Gakupo/Len/Gumi one), you can even here a slight drumroll-like sound which makes it seem like the music is vibrating in your ear but not to the point of deafening you. Very nice.

I...can't choose a favorite to be honest. But seriously, I think Naopo is one of those producers that made me like Gakupo. If you need to listen to a theatre-like Gakupo, please listen to his works :).

(There will be a mod post after this, so please wait for it! /o/)
