Weekly Utattemita Ranking # 165 (December 26, 2011 to January 02, 2012)

Since this is the first ranking of the new year, it contains a ton of new songs! You won't see a lot of returners this week, instead you'll see a whole new layer of awesome. The PONPONPON and Senbonzakura bandwagons are near gone so you can enjoy a variety of songs this week.

↑# - the song moved up from a previous top 30 rank
↓# - song moved down from a previous top 30 rank
- song is a re-entry to the top 30 rankings

I'll be including the weekly top ten and the overall top thirty of the week. Links to the nicovideo are included as well as some information. You may download the .mp3 file by inputting the link @ nicosound. Enjoy!

Weekly Vocaloid Ranking # 221 (December 19-26, 2011)

Yesterday was Kagamine Rin and Len's birthday! But the Kagamine wave still hasn't reached this week's ranking (too late D:) so we'll have to wait next week for that, hopefully. However, this ranking is pretty special in a way because you get to hear awesome first songs from THREE new Vocaloids. That would be CUL, Yuzuki Yukari, and IA ~Aria on the Planetes~. I'm surprised at how wonderful they all sound, not to mention they were tuned and their songs composed by really veteran/popular producers, so I hope you enjoyed them as much as I did. Aside from that, we have a few strong songs from last week as well as new stuff from popular sings (longtimenoseedoriko!) so this is pretty much a ranking that won't bore you at all. Enjoy!

Weekly Vocaloid Ranking # 219 (December 05-12, 2011)

This week, we have a lot of covers courtesy of the queen of Len covers, OrebananaP. There are also surprisingly a lot of returning songs, most probably because of their covers in the Utattemita Ranking. We also have quite a few unfamiliar names in this ranking so if you can, please spare a minute to check their music out!

Monthly Nico Nico Indies Ranking - August 2011

You might remember that I did a sort of intro post (plus a previous ranking writeup) for Nico Nico Indies Ranking. This is the ranking for this month. As I said, NNI is much more slow-moving compared to utattemita and Vocaloid, so you might still encounter songs here which appeared in the previous ranking. In order to keep your interests piqued, I'll copy my intro discussion on the artist from last ranking as they appear here. :)

Weekly Vocaloid Ranking # 201 (August 01-08, 2011)

Not many new releases this week, so we still have the classics up and strong. It's funny how some of the Ps with songs still in the ranking also uploaded new songs this week (lol40mP). The new songs all have their charm, too, so please do check them out! Oh, and by the way, Happy Synthesizer is back XD.

Weekly Vocaloid Ranking # 200 (July 25-August 1, 2011)

This week doesn't have as much new ones as last week's but there are still quite a few worthy of a listen. There are some Ps which are new to the rankings, too, so I think everyone should check out what kind of awesome songs they uploaded. :) Since it's 1AM here, this post is going to be short and sweet ♥.

Weekly Vocaloid Ranking # 198 (July 11-18, 2011)

Hello guys. It's been a while since I last wrote a post and I know the lateness of this is inexcusable. I'm really sorry. Work has been killing me right now (I'm on overtime until 11PM for the sixth day OTL). Please, please forgive me again this time for the lack of interesting stuff to say.

Anyway, this week, Nem continues his reign on number 1, but for a different song. Episode.0 also saw another week at the ranking, thanks to Gackt's single being release. There's quite a lot of cute Luka songs released this week, but it's coupled by two unusual songs from UramanbouP and Kikuo's usual creepy stuff.

Apologies again for the lateness. If you've read the utaran, you already now my problems with my Internet. I just hijacked someone's net for a while so I can post this. Again, lack of witty comments and stuff :(.

Not that many new songs this week and most of the rankings are just movements of those from the previous ranking. However, I hope you won't skip this one because despite the few new stuff, most of the songs are from Ps you don't hear from often or you might have never even heard of before.

Vocaloid Midyear Special Ranking 2010 2nd Part (GUMI Compilation)

The first half of 2010 SP ranking (GUMI part) can be found here. For an intro on the SP ranking, please refer to the Miku compilation!

This compilation has even less songs at 80, but I'm sure they're all worth your listen!

Since all of them are GUMI songs, I'll just type the song, composer, and additional Vocaloids used if there are any.

Even More Singing Producers?

The last one for this year, this is our third list of songs Vocaloid producers sang. They can be self-covers, covers of other songs or original songs altogether. You might be familiar with some of them as they appeared in the utattemita ranking.

Weekly Utaran #112 (12/20-12/27, 2010)

Weekly Utattemita Ranking #112 (December 20-27, 2010)

This is the ranking for Christmas week, which means there are tons of Christmas-related songs and parodies. Surprisingly, the top ones are very predictable since they haven't been toppled since last week, just rearranged a lot. Still, there are many interesting uploads this week, a rather big influx of parodies, and returners you wouldn't expect at all.

Singing Producers

Last weekend, the_desserter and I were talking about HoehoeP/Nanou and his singing skills and eventually, it kind of branched out to producers in the utattemita category. Hence, this post is born XD.

Producers are known in the Vocaloid part of Nico Nico Douga as the composers, lyricists and Vocaloid tuners. But not many people know that a lot of producers also sing (either in the utattemita section only or in the whole doujin scene). Sometimes they sing covers of their own songs (self-covers) or songs of other Vocaloid producers. You may know one producer who sings covers of songs, you know, Tourai (minato/RyuuseiP)? XD He's one of the few who uses a different name for his covers, but that was because he was named Tourai/Tolie/Turai even before he admitted that he's minato ^^;.

Here are some of the producers who also upload their songs. Most of them have rearranged versions of the songs they are covering, sometimes just accompanied by guitar (they sound awesome, btw XD). These are some that I know of, but there are a lot more producers who upload their own singing, so if you know of them, please do inform me in the comments :3. The songs I used are just samples, though. Please visit their mylists for more.

Producer Spotlight: Nem

Nem

mylist | website | blog

Nem is a composer who is most probably well-known by now, not only because of his Vocaloid works but also because of his collaborations outside the Vocaloid-dom, either in his unit or with other singers. If you are a fan of GUMI, a fan of certain Nico singers (somewhere along the Asamakku/Dasoclear/wotamin mountain), you probably have heard of him and his works :).

Nem started his Vocaloid career in Nico Nico Douga sometime last year on June. He uploaded an old song of his, revised to be sung by GUMI right on the day she was released. His music borders between ballad and jazz, with excessive but dexterous use of violin and piano music. He also uses guitars in some of his ballads ("Alice ni Sayonara"), but not as much. It might be coincidental, but some of his songs portray certain seasons like summer ("Starmine") and winter ("Sayonara Polaris", etc.).

One impression he left with is first work is how he tunes his Vocaloids, specifically GUMI. He has a way of tuning GUMI so smoothly, she sounds human, complete with the pauses and breaths. He also rarely makes GUMI sing so high that she wavers, so her smooth, silky low voice is preserved very well in his songs. His Miku is also tuned to perfection with crisp last notes and no gratingly high/low reaches.

Aside from composing Vocaloid songs, Nem sings covers of Vocaloid songs. He also composes songs to be sung by his unit partner Aya or by himself. He also composed for PointFive's EnhAnce CD, specifically "Somatic Delusion" and "Summer Rain".

sample songs

# vocaloid
Yoiyami no Augustin (GUMI)
Bokura no Uta (GUMI)
Alice ni Sayonara
Starmine (GUMI)
winter gift (Hatsune Miku)

# original + covers sung by Nem
Kanon (original)
Itsumo Yori Nakimushi na Sora (original by Rerulili)
Mitsubachi (original by NioP)
Jenga (original by 40mP)
* you can listen to some of Nem's original works (sung by Aya) in his website.

nikki says
I first heard of Nem in "Yoiyami no Augustin" because I was excited to listen to GUMI works (note: Nakajima Megumi fan). It was really impressive, but I felt it was underappreciated at that time. Next time I saw his work was when he released "Starmine", which I immediately loved because of the theme, the melody and GUMI's voice. If buzzG is my GUMI rock producer, Nem will be the jazz/ballad one and both of their works will always be included in my primers for GUMI/Vocaloid songs. If I were to choose a favorite song composed by him, it would be "Starmine" despite the fact that I have a ton of "Scissorhands" covers in my playlist... As for his covers, my favorite would be "Itsumo Yori Nakimushi na Sora".

On an unrelated note..

MGS Utattemita CD "Starry Sky" can now be ordered from Amazon! You might remember I wrote a review of the CD which has a wonderful singing cast including Miichan, Pagoda, Jack, Keisen, REN, etc.

Please buy the CD!

Weekly Vocaloid Ranking #144 (June 28 - July 05, 2010)

While I posted the Weekly Utaran late, I'm posting this a little early, since I cannot be online for long hours. I am really sorry about this. Anyway, this week's ranking is a lot more coherent compared to the previous, although there are still some stray old stuff returning here and there. Wowaka's bandwagon trinity is also back XD;. But don't worry, there are a lot of lovely songs uploaded this week, plus GUMI's redeemed from last week's confusion.

Weekly Vocaloid Ranking #143 (June 14-21, 2010)

This week's ranking is unbelievably screwed up for some reason. I don't know if it's because of some new releases, celebrations, or some sort of evil master plan. I was expecting a lot of GUMI in this ranking but it seems I've been disappointed :(. More thoughts below!

Anyway, those with blue arrows are the old songs. I'm wrote this while I was watching JPN vs PAR football so if there are any mistakesI overlooked, I'm so sorry D:.

PointFive (.5) enhAnce CD

PUPI and SunaP just announced information about their CD: enhAnce which is performed by a group called PointFive (.5). PointFive is composed of Dasoku, Asamaru, Clear, Amu, Miichan and PUPI. You might notice, if you've listened to previous lives by Pupi, that this is the "DACAMP" secret he's been discussing for about a month now ;).

The website can be found here.

The CD will have 12 songs and will be a mixture of original songs composed by PUPI, SunaP and guest producers (Nem, 40mP and RenaissanceP). The cover art, if I'm not mistaken, was drawn by Aki Akane. The CD will be released July 07, 2010 at 2,625 yen. There is already an Amazon page for it :).
EDIT: Here is the full track list of the album, plus the singers and composers involved. Some of them are covers of Vocaloid songs.
