Weekly Vocaloid Ranking # 203 (August 15-22, 2011)

Apologies that this is late again. I'm having problems with Nicodou today and I can't load the individual videos, so I just settled for the ranking video itself and the song previews. Sorry of the comments are much more unhelpful than usual ^^;.

It's MMD cup season so you'll be seeing a lot of MMD videos. There's also quite a lot of Rin, which means variety from the GUMI-fest we had recently. You'll notice in the history from this ranking and the previous that last year, around this time was the time popular producers started using GUMI (hachi, SignalP, etc.), probably signifying her rise in popularity, too :). It's been a year since Matryoshka, WTF.... I am still looping it..........

This is so late. I'm so sorry. Anyway, this week, we STILL have a lot of GUMI and surprisingly many Luka songs. A lot have still remained from the previous ranking, though.

Weekly Vocaloid Ranking # 201 (August 01-08, 2011)

Not many new releases this week, so we still have the classics up and strong. It's funny how some of the Ps with songs still in the ranking also uploaded new songs this week (lol40mP). The new songs all have their charm, too, so please do check them out! Oh, and by the way, Happy Synthesizer is back XD.

Weekly Vocaloid Ranking # 200 (July 25-August 1, 2011)

This week doesn't have as much new ones as last week's but there are still quite a few worthy of a listen. There are some Ps which are new to the rankings, too, so I think everyone should check out what kind of awesome songs they uploaded. :) Since it's 1AM here, this post is going to be short and sweet ♥.

Weekly Vocaloid Ranking # 198 (July 11-18, 2011)

Hello guys. It's been a while since I last wrote a post and I know the lateness of this is inexcusable. I'm really sorry. Work has been killing me right now (I'm on overtime until 11PM for the sixth day OTL). Please, please forgive me again this time for the lack of interesting stuff to say.

Anyway, this week, Nem continues his reign on number 1, but for a different song. Episode.0 also saw another week at the ranking, thanks to Gackt's single being release. There's quite a lot of cute Luka songs released this week, but it's coupled by two unusual songs from UramanbouP and Kikuo's usual creepy stuff.

Since Nikki will be gone for a few days, I'll be filling in for her today! Also Sippotan is back, so this is likely the last weekly ranking by Iori.

Sorry my comments are so boring, I liked most of the songs this week (even the ones I didn't comment on) 8D;. There are some old returners due to new uploads and news.

Producer Spotlight: 164 / 203soundworks

164 / 203soundworks

mylist | community | blog | mixi community

You might already know 164 as the composer of the popular songs, shiningray and Jibun Inch Monitor. It is also his first work, which is why he had quite a successful introduction in the Vocaloid community and continues to gain impressive following even now. 164, by the way, is often read in Japanese (ichirokuyon). 203soundworks come about when you add 164 and 39 (miku).

164's music is centered on guitar-rich rock songs ranging from rock ballads to rock-to-screamo borders, and he himself said he's basically interested in emo to hardcore songs. There are literally tons of good rock composers in the Vocaloid community, but what makes 164 unique is how he is flexible with his music. Despite his awesome guitar-playing, he does not base his music on guitars alone. Most of the time, his works are dominated by really amazing drums, piano, violin, or electronic music, with the guitar melody vibrating underneath it before slowly rising to a loud chorus or instrumental. He is also very creative with his intros and instrument usage that no two of his works sound similar unless you focus on the guitar-playing.

His main Vocaloids are Miku and GUMI, although he also uses Rin/Len from time to time. His Miku seems to be stereotyped towards his rock/emo ballads probably because it's the genre he started with. GUMI was used more in his upbeat works. His Miku's tuning differs through time, as she was first tuned with a shaky deep voice, but recently she sounds higher and more solid with slight curves in her lines. His GUMI is also tuned solidly and often alternately very low and very high, despite GUMI's "breathiness" (which doesn't show much in his works). His Rin is tuned thin and high, a bit similar to LiveP's tuning with curls at the ends of her lines.

The popularity of his works led him to release successful solo albums like EXIT TUNES PRESENTS the complete best of 164 from 203soundworks feat. Hatsune Miku and Memory -164 from 203soundworks-. He has also contributed to a lot of EXIT TUNES compilations including Super Producers Beat, Stardom 2, Vocaloanthems, and Supernovas 1-5. He is also part of neko's album Trapped in Her Eyes.

Aside from writing Vocaloid songs, 164 also participates in a band, PEIM, composed of Popeko, Espee, 164 and Mado (hence the acronym). He also lends his guitar-playing prowess to 40mP, in the latter's work for DAISYxDAISY. He and 40mP also collaborated recently to produce the beautiful song Time Machine, which lyrics were written by 164.

sample songs
sleeping beauty (Miku)
madder sky (Miku)
Kibou no Hashi to Jiyuu no Mahou no Tsugi (Rin)
Tokotoko (GUMI)
inori (GUMI)

nikki says
I didn't like Shiningray much, so in the past I tended to skim over 164's works, but when I listened to Madder Sky, I decided I should give him a listen. I was never disappointed afterwards :D. I prefer his upbeat songs more than his rock ballads, but his piano works in his ballads is awesome. I often await how he'd do his intro and what instrument he'd use because it's different every time XD. Despite the fact that I love GUMI to the extreme, I prefer listening to 164's Miku.

Weekly Vocaran #178 (02/21-02/28, 2011)

Weekly Vocaloid Ranking #178 (February 21 - 28, 2011)

Today's week has a lot of movements, few songs have decided to do a comeback and take one rank up at a time, while a lot more had decided it's time for them to zoom down. Which leaves us with new songs in the upper rankings, all of them worth checking out! I apologize for the lack of good descriptions, as I'm running out of time ^^;.

This is not a strong week, although there are a lot of new covers. It's just that you'll be seeing a lot of returnees, a couple of them caused by the number 1 song and the rest...because we love 'em? XD The rest are remnants from last week. Still, it doesn't mean there are no good songs this week. There are a few which are really worth checking out! :3

Vocaloid Midyear Special Ranking 2010 2nd Part (GUMI Compilation)

The first half of 2010 SP ranking (GUMI part) can be found here. For an intro on the SP ranking, please refer to the Miku compilation!

This compilation has even less songs at 80, but I'm sure they're all worth your listen!

Since all of them are GUMI songs, I'll just type the song, composer, and additional Vocaloids used if there are any.

Vocaloid Midyear Special Ranking 2010 2nd Part (Hatsune Miku compilation)

As you might remember, I posted the midyear special ranking sometime in July, where the songs included were those uploaded from December 2009 to June 2010. This is the LATTER PART of that ranking, where the top songs from June 15 to December 14, 2010 are uploaded.

The video has 80 songs, but the mylist has 200 songs O_O;. A-anyway, I've included them all in the list. As with the previous mid-year ranking and all the other rankings which aren't weekly, this is written in reverse for more suspense :D.

Since all of them are Miku songs, I'll just type the song, composer and additional Vocaloids used if there are any :).

Weekly Vocaran #169 (12/20-27, 2010)

Weekly Vocaloid Ranking #169 (December 20-27, 2010)

This week's ranking doesn't have as many new uploads as before but hey, 15 new songs in the ranking isn't bad. There are strong keepers (LOLwowakadecoetc) but the ones who rose to the top are new, lovely music definitely worth a listen. I apologize for the lateness of this post, though, as well, Christmas = parties = sleepless nights. Yup. Not to mention the Internet is amazingly slow during the holidays, isn't it? Anyway....

Today's ranking is a bit confusing with all the surprising returners, the keeps (wow) the ups and downs from old songs (lol, all the catchy songs moved a notch up or kept their rank, wow). Also, we have quite a beautiful number 1 and a lot of new songs. Most importantly, we have KAITO in the ranking XD. Enjoy!

Vocaloid Midyear Special Ranking 2010 (Kagamine compilation)

For a proper intro, please read the Miku ranking here. The Kagamine twins has 184 songs in the ranking mylist, but I'm only tackling the top 100. Since there are technically two singers here (Rin and Len), I'll note who is singing which song.

So far, this and the annual rankings are the only ones I type in reverse order (from 100-1) so that it'd be more exciting :). If you want me to do the midyear/annual rankings in the traditional way (the 1-xx order), just tell me :).

You might notice that some of the titles/P names are still in Japanese. It's because I'm not sure how to romanize them correctly.
